To Remind Of Death

People often deeply reflect on life when faced with death. This profound clarity often arrives too late, yet it reveals essential truths about existence. In the project “To Remind of Death”, Thai artist Jakkaphat Bunmachertchai communicates these truths through a series of black-and-white images, inspired by his time as a monk in Thailand, where he feared the unknown aspects of death and the afterlife. In Thai Buddhism, death is seen as part of the life cycle, emphasizing the journey through one’s lifetime, giving life its true meaning and value. This perspective eases fear, fostering acceptance.

Jakkaphat learned that death is not an end but a part of life’s journey, an insight he now conveys through his art. Using his photography expertise, he aims to express the Buddhist perspective on life and death, transcending religious boundaries to reach a broader audience. His work serves as a reminder that death, though often feared, is a fundamental aspect of life that imparts significance and encourages mindful living. Through his lens, Jakkaphat offers a contemplative space for viewers to reflect on their own existence and the transient nature of life.
